Real-time Audio Translator for YouTube
Inconveniences in watching videos in foreign language is currently addressed by visual services such as transcripts and subtitles. But these services take your attention away from the video and isn’t helpful to those who are visually impaired.
Voicelator is a Chrome extension that utilizes existing Microsoft and Google translation technologies to enhance your foreign video watching experience. Voicelator translates your YouTube videos from one language to another in real time, outputting an audible translation over the original video--allowing you to be fully immersed in the video without visual distractions.
With global proliferation of visual media through online services like YouTube, it became increasingly easier to find videos and clips of our interests. Although more videos are available for us in general, we are now encountering problems on its own, because we now see more videos in foreign languages that we want to watch but cannot due to language barrier.
This challenge is addressed by various visual aids such as transcripts and subtitles; however, these available services do not appeal to a larger audience that require more than mere visual aid. This includes those who have visual disabilities, those who cannot read, and those who wish to learn another language by listening to a familiar video in a foreign language. Our initial motivation for this project came from addressing the needs of these user groups, and since then, we have reached our goal of developing an extension that supports live speech translation on YouTube videos.
